The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park Authority and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife would like to caution the public and visitors not to approach or provoke the hippo that has regularly been seen in the vicinity of the St Lucia town. The young hippo, believed to be between three and four years of age, has been spotted grazing around The Bridge holiday residential complex. There has so far not been any threat to human life or property from the young Hippo.

Hippos are herbivores, relying solely on grass for their diet. Short grass is their favourite, which may explain why this particular hippo has made one of the complexes its second home. They can eat up to about 40kg a day. At birth they weigh about 25-55kg but grow to be about 13 feet long and up to 5 feet tall, with males weighing between 1600 and 3200kg and 655 and 2344kg for females. They are particularly active at the moment as there is a greater likelihood of them coming out during daytime during the cooler winter months.

I remember when i was in St. Lucia and everyone told us which street to use in the evening after dinner, because of hippos.

Well, i would say in Germany we use a Lawnmower or sheeps to cut the grass.

Now i know how it works in St. Lucia.
